How to Clean Your Watch Safely at Home

Regular cleaning keeps a watch looking good and protects your skin, and most of it is simple. The key is to match the method to the watch, and above all to check the water resistance before using any water.

For a quick wipe, use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints from the case and crystal. It is safe on every watch and it is a good habit to do after each wear.

For a steel bracelet on a water-resistant watch, check the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down. Brush the bracelet gently with a soft toothbrush and warm water with a drop of mild soap, then rinse and dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. Avoid soaking, and never use it on a watch that is not rated for water.

Leather straps should not get wet. Wipe them with a barely damp cloth and let them dry naturally. Rubber and silicone straps can be washed with soapy water, and fabric straps can be hand washed and dried flat. Replace worn straps rather than trying to rescue them.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, abrasives or polishing cloths with compounds unless you know what they do. Polishing removes metal, and repeated polishing can soften the sharp edges and details of a case.

If dirt has got into crevices or the watch has been exposed to sea water, rinse a diver in fresh water and dry it, and consider a professional clean. A good routine is a wipe after wear and a proper clean once a month.
