How to Sell a Watch and Get a Fair Deal
October 8, 2026
Selling a watch is easier when you know your options and prepare. A fair deal depends on timing, presentation and choosing the right route for the watch.
Start by gathering everything. The box, papers, extra links, service records and receipts all add value, and a complete set generally sells better than a watch on its own. Take clear photos in good light of the dial, case sides, caseback and clasp.
Research the market. Look at recent sold listings, not just asking prices, for the same reference and condition. Remember that condition, originality and whether the watch has been polished affect the price significantly.
There are three main routes. A dealer will buy quickly and for cash, but they need a margin, so expect less than a private sale. A private sale on a marketplace or forum can fetch more but takes time and carries risk. Consignment lets a dealer sell for you in exchange for a commission, which is a middle ground.
Protect yourself from scams. Insist on secure payment, such as a verified bank transfer that has cleared or an escrow service, and never ship before payment is confirmed. Be wary of buyers who want to use an unusual courier or overpay and ask for a refund.
Finally, consider service and cosmetic work carefully. A full service can help a sale for some watches, but do not polish a collectible watch, since heavy polishing can reduce its value.
