Panerai was founded in Florence in 1860, initially as a watchmaker's shop and supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Royal Navy, developing the large cushion-shaped dive watches worn by navy frogmen in the 1930s–40s. The brand was relaunched for the public in 1993 and joined the Richemont Group in 1997, retaining its signature oversized Luminor and Radiomir cases.
